Comments: The Different Story is (yet another) spin-off from the Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime. This volume tells the background story of Mami and Kyoko, before any of the events of the anime happened. It fleshes out both their characters, particularly Mami. We learn of Mamis’ loneliness and her drive. However, the highlight still has to be Kyoko as her tragic backstory of how her wish killed her family is expanded upon and made all the more sadder when you already know how it will end. Surprisingly, the volume ends with that arc finished and begins with a new one. The art and aesthetics are good, and while the fight scenes can be confusing thanks to so many things in the panel at once, this is an engrossing volume.
