Psychic School Wars (2012)

Psychic School Wars is based upon a science fiction novel.  In it, it follows Kenji who is an average boy in middle school.  He has a childhood friend Natsuki, and Kenji has a crush on Kahori.  Unbeknownst to Kenji, Natsuki harbor feelings for him and the film's central theme is expressing your feelings.  The new student, Ryoichi, transfers to their class and afterwards, strange things are afoot.  The student council seemingly decides to create new strict rules to ban mobile phones, and Ryoichi is converting many students via some sort of mysterious power which apparently allows them to use telepathy.  Unfortunately, the plot is all over the place and it can't seem to decide whether to follow through with Ryoichi's plan, Kenji and Natsuki's relationship, or Ryoichi and Kahori's relationship.  As a result, it never develops any of its plot enough to anchor the film and it feels unfocused as a result.  The ending is confusing, as are the motivations of Ryoichi as while he provides some explanations behind his actions, they are not enough to give the viewers a clear view on his character.  The art direction is Psychic School Wars' strongest aspect, with beautiful backgrounds.  The relationship between Kenji and Natsuki is also one of the highlights.  However, apart from those two points, Psychic School Wars is flawed and is poorly paced.
