The Mummy (1999)
The Mummy is an action horror film but more focused on the action than horror. It follows Rick, an adventurer, and Evelyn, a librarian who focuses on Egypt, as they find the hidden lost treasure at Hamunaptra. Little do they realize that the treasure contains a cursed mummy, an Ancient Egyptian High Priest who was mummified alive for breaking taboo. While the premise holds promise, and the film generally delivers on it, the pacing leaves some to be desired. This isn't to say that it's bad but the beginning is definitely slow, taking over half an hour before the characters get together. Then the ending also felt dragged out as it was taking a long time until we arrive at the climax and the protagonists and antagonist battle. The film relies heavily on CGI for a lot of the mummies, backgrounds and beetles. They are fairly well done considering when the film was released and doesn't detract too much from the film. The Mummy feels more like an action comedy to be honest and that's because the lighter tone coupled with some pretty good gags makes for an enjoyable watch.
