Godzilla (1998)
Godzilla is the American take on the classic Japanese monster. It takes place mainly in New York after the gigantic reptile was discovered. Suspected to have grown to this enormous size due to radiation from nuclear tests, it wrecks havoc on the city. The beginning is a tad bit slow as it builds up the premise but soon after, surprisingly, it shows up in full view as to rampages. Unfortunately, the film takes place completing in rainy conditions, and during the climax, at night. This is not a good combination as it makes everything too dark and vague. The plot stalls midway and doesn't really recover, leading to some boring scenes. The characters don't feel like they come together naturally and don't work too well off with each other. There are plenty of promising concepts but not executed too well. The film relies heavily on CGI and since it was made in the late 90s, it has not aged particularly well. It's still an okay film though and feels like a classic.
