Toy Review: Transformers Generations Studio Series Mixmaster (Voyager)

Review:  #560
Name:  Mixmaster
Brand:  Transformers
Allegiance:  Decepticon
Line:  Generations - Studio Series
Year of Release:  2019
Size Class:  Voyager (Wave 8)
Mold Status:  new

VEHICLE MODE:

Mixmaster transforms into a licensed Mack Granite cement truck, and unlike the previous Voyager figure, the drum does not include a giant Decepticon insignia.

The truck mode is mostly pretty good.  The back is a little bit messy as you can see the exposed robot claws.  The spare wheels are fake and are molded there.

It's hard to tell in the stock photos, but the gap between the cab and the drum is a bit bigger than you would expect.

In terms of size, Mixmaster is normal for a Voyager these days.  This means that he will be slimmer and slightly smaller than Voyagers from even a few years ago, this is an unfortunate fact of rising costs, :(.

A good truck mode that looks the part.  While he lacks play value (as he can only roll on a flat surface), this is forgiven since he has to combine to form Devastator as well.

TRANSFORMATION:

Despite having to combine into Devastator, and being screen accurate to boot, the transformation scheme is not complicated.  The drum expected unfolds to form the arms, while his legs from the middle of the back.  The cab is dedicated to be Devastator's head so it just sits on his back.  To be honest, it's a tad bit boring.

ROBOT MODE:

Mixmaster's robot mode is definitely more screen accurate from the previous version but it is still not perfect.

He wears the cab on his back, since it is Devastator's head.  You can see that he is definitely top heavy, and most of that mass ends up on his arms.

The headsculpt is nice and is situated on a balljoint.

Mixmaster is wider than he is tall, and that is absolutely fine.  Above is a comparison against Studio Series Optimus.

As part of the Studio Series line, he comes with a cardboard stand.

The stand shows off the pyramids from the scene in the movie that took place in Egypt, although we never see Mixmaster's robot mode during that scene.

Articulation is pretty good but also feels restricted at the same time.

His arms has plenty of joints, with four joints in total spanning from his shoulder to his wrist.  The drum pieces also doubles up as shields and this was always cool.  Their tilt can be angled higher or lower but they do not have joints to angle them outwards.

The long arms also feels like they overwhelm his legs, which feels too skinny and insubstantial as a result.

The figure is definitely designed to squat.  His feet are long enough such that balance is not an issue.

With all that is being asked of the figure, the robot mode came out as being pretty solid.

OVERALL:

Mixmaster is a nice figure.  While it doesn't quite reach the same heights as Scrapmetal, if you are not forming Devastator, Mixmaster by itself is still solid.  The truck mode is great, and the robot mode looks good, even if it is a bit limited when posing him.  Of course, he is an integral part of the Constructicons and he is definitely worth it as they look amazing together as a team.
