Coco (2017)

Coco is a Disney Pixar animated film with a heavy family theme.  Based off Mexican culture, it starts off being somewhat bland and generic.  It follows Miguel who comes from a family of shoemakers.  Four generations are living together and thanks to a falling out between his great-great-grandfather and great-great-grandmother, the family rule has banned music of any kind.  Unfortunately, Miguel's passion is music and he aspires to become a musician.  His journey into that though, is more of a supernatural affair.  The film is inspired by the Day of the Dead holiday and it mixes the living with the dead.  It is past the halfway point and especially the ending, where Coco truly shines.  The antagonist is predictable and the way that they are foiled is pretty ordinary and too idealistic.  However, the theme of family and how important it was to remember them comes through strongly.  Not only does Miguel learns a valuable lesson, but so does the rest of his family.  Miguel isn't proven right and his family proven wrong but rather they come to an understanding and that is what matters.  The music may not immediately jump out at you as being good but when it plays in the ending, it evokes a strong sense of sentiment.  So while it has a beginning that's relatively tough to sit through, the ending is well worth the time and makes Coco a great film to watch.
