Book Review: The Shadow in the North
Review: #826
Title: The Shadow in the North
Series: Sally Lockhart - 2nd book
Author: Philip Pullman
Comments: Sally Lockhart is a financial advisor struggling in Victorian London, filled with prejudice and judgment from others. Being a strong woman herself, with a sense of honor and curiosity, she finds herself investigating the collapse of a company that her client had invested in. Through this, a bigger plot is uncovered. The style of writing is interesting in the fact that it is subdued but does enough to keep you reading, revealing each little plot point bit by bit. The beginnings were harder to sit through purely because of all the teasing. Various characters would each find something, as the reader you know that they are somehow connected, but this would not be revealed until many pages down the track. Once the whole plot and the antagonist is shown, you then wonder how Sally, with the little power that she has, is going to topple them down. Perhaps the biggest shock comes towards the end, because the fate of some of the characters is not what you would expect. The Shadow in the North is an intriguing mystery and the steady pacing does a good job of playing the story out.
