Avatar (2009)
Avatar is an impressive film when it was released, with full CGI worlds with impressive effects. Set in the alien planet of Pandora, it shows up a new world complete with its own ecosystem, animals and inhabitants. It firstly follows the humans, who has started to colonize the planet with the aim if mining a valuable metal. An ex-marine, Jake Sully, who has lost his use of his legs, join the scientific team who uses avatars grown by combining the DNA of the natives and humans, to study the planet. They pretty much put their consciousness into the avatars. We quickly see the clash between the scientists and the corporate employees whose only goal is financially motivated and do not care for the life on the planet at all. The rest of the film spends its time showing off Pandora and all its sights, as well as how the natives live their lives in coexistent with nature. Avatar has a strong environmental message and paints the humans in a negative light. While the visuals are beautiful, the plot ends up being thin at times and the long length does not help. It takes a long while to get to see Pandora, as well as a long time before the climax happens. Nevertheless, there were a few surprising moments and it makes Pandora believable as an alien world.
