Hentai Kamen is a comedy superhero film based upon the manga from the 1990s. The premise is very unique and very weird, likely to offend a significant amount of people. Kyosuke is a high school student but when he finds his love about to die, he discovers that he is able to turn into the titular superhero, Hentai Kamen, by putting on a pair of panties as a mask. Yes, this is really what happens. As Hentai Kamen, he loses most of his clothes, wearing a pair of white shoes, stockings and a thin piece to cover his crotch. As expected, the film relies a lot on crude humor. Right from the beginning, it sets the tone by having wacky and highly exaggerated pieces of acting and events. There is a bit of mood whiplash when there are certain parts that is believable in a live-action scenario, but then suddenly pulls in the craziness from the manga (such as special attacks and physically impossible feats). Likewise, the humor works most of the time but there are still plenty of misses. The plot is pretty simple, Kyosuke is balancing his two personas, all the while trying to fight off the bad guys who are trying to invade and take over the school. While the first act was solid, the second dragged on for a bit without anything being too interesting. Hentai Kamen is a bizarre film that one needs an open mind going into it, in order to enjoy it for what it is.
