Toy Review: Transformers BotBots Calamity Keys (Series 3)

Review:  #603
Name:  Calamity Keys
Brand:  Transformers
Allegiance:  N/A
Line:  BotBots
Year of Release:  2019
Size Class:  BotBot (Series 3)
Mold Status:  redeco of Grampiano

PIANO MODE:

Calamity Keys transforms into an upright piano and this is a great alternate mode.  The keys are painted, there is a music sheet, and the pedals are painted gold.

There isn't much visible kibble all around which is impressive.  Yes, you can see the robot legs from the back but it isn't too obvious.

As a BotBot, Calamity Keys is fairly small but isn't too bad, above is a comparison against Legion Barricade.

This is one of the best BotBot alternate modes that we've seen.

TRANSFORMATION:

Rotate the music sheet to reveal the face (which neatly doubles up as hair) and the sides fold out to form the arms.  Then you can fold the feet down and flip down the keys.

ROBOT MODE:

The robot mode is atypical of a normal Transformer but it works out okay in the end.  The arms are the weirdest part since they're prongs that stick out to the side.

The back profile doesn't change too much.  It's good that there isn't anything sticking out to skew the balance.

The head is pretty cool, as already mentioned, the usage of the music sheet as hair for robot mode is clever.

Calamity Keys doesn't gain much height in robot mode, so he is very short compared to a Legion figure.

Articulation is the figure's weakest aspect as you can only move the prong arms up and down.  Still, the unique profile makes this little robot pretty cool.

OVERALL:

While Calamity Keys is a redeco, this is an excellent mode, and a great repaint with a color scheme more stereotypical of a piano.  If you haven't gotten this mold already, then it is definitely one to get.
