Book Review: Gods of Warriors
Review: #834
Title: Gods and Warriors
Series: Gods and Warriors - 1st book
Author: Michelle Paver
Comments: Taking place 3500 years ago in Ancient Greece, it follows an outcast by the name of Hylas. Immediately, it presents an intriguing setup of Hylas escaping from mysterious black warriors who had killed everyone he knew. His sister is missing and he is out of options, he sets out to try and find her. In the process, he continues to struggle as no one will help him due to his status as an outcast. A bigger problem soon arises though as the reason behind the black warriors are revealed. Things escalate quickly and before too long, Hylas is fighting for his lives, meeting Pirra, a daughter of what seemed to be his enemies, and escaping from shadowy fantasy creatures. At first, it seems a weird combination in how the author merged together fantastical elements such as a dolphin companion by the name of Spirit, and introducing the Goddess and her powers. These elements are never explained fully and their contributions to the story are questionable. While you would expect the bond between Hylas and Pirra to grow, getting them closer to each other, it never quite reaches there which feels off. The ending tries to present closure but there are still too many elements unresolved, including the fate of a shadowy character.
